When I first sat down to write what would become the Arch Mage Series, I knew I wanted to create something bigger than a single world. The idea of multiple Earths, each with its own unique magic, creatures, and challenges, became the foundation of this five-book YA fantasy adventure.
The Spark of Inspiration
The concept started with a simple question: What if our Earth was just one of many? What if a young protagonist could travel between worlds, each more fantastical than the last? This portal fantasy concept allowed me to explore different themes and mythologies across the series while maintaining a cohesive storyline.
Building Each Earth
- First Earth - The gateway world where it all begins, blending familiar elements with the first hints of magic
- Second Earth - A journey to the planet's core, inspired by classic adventure tales and geological wonders
- Third Earth - The dragon planet, where I could fully embrace high fantasy and explore dragon lore
- Fourth Earth - A realm of mythical creatures, drawing from global mythology and folklore
- False Earth - The darkest installment, featuring demons and testing everything the characters have learned
The Writing Process
Each book took approximately 8-12 months to write, with extensive world-building notes created before drafting. I maintained detailed maps, character profiles, and magic system rules to ensure consistency across all five books.
Lessons Learned
Writing a multi-book series taught me the importance of planning ahead while staying flexible enough to let characters surprise me. Some of my favorite moments in the series came from unexpected character decisions that felt true to who they'd become.
For Aspiring Writers
If you're considering writing a fantasy series, my advice is to start with your world's rules and stick to them. Readers will forgive many things, but inconsistent magic systems or world-building aren't among them.
