Every story has an origin, but some are born from places deeper than imagination alone. The Arch Mage Series didn't start in a writer's notebook or during a brainstorming session—it began on walks with my daughter, during some of the most challenging times of our lives.
When Chronic Illness Became Our Reality
My daughter was diagnosed with POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) and chronic migraines. For those unfamiliar with POTS, it's a condition that affects blood flow and can cause dizziness, fatigue, and a host of other debilitating symptoms. Combined with chronic migraines, it meant many days spent in bed, unable to participate in the activities she loved.
She was a fantasy reader at heart, finding solace in stories of magic and adventure. But the her illness was also contributing to deconditioning, making her symptoms worse. We needed to find a way to get her moving, to fight back against what her body was going through.
Walking Into a New World
That's when our walks began. At first, they were short, difficult, and often painful for her. But we started talking, creating stories together to distract from the discomfort. We imagined a protagonist who understood what it meant to live with chronic pain and illness, someone who faced insurmountable odds not despite her challenges, but while carrying them.
Together, we crafted the story of a girl who discovers her magic—not as an escape from her reality, but as a way to transform it. A character who proves that strength isn't about being without pain, but about moving forward with it.
From Walks to Worlds
Those conversations on our walks became the foundation of the Arch Mage Series. Each of the Five Earths represents different challenges, different obstacles to overcome. The journey through these worlds mirrors the journey my daughter was on—learning to navigate a body that didn't always cooperate, finding strength in unexpected places, and discovering that magic exists even in our darkest moments.
Why This Story Matters
For every young person battling chronic illness, for every parent watching their child struggle, for everyone who's ever felt limited by their body—this series is for you. It's a reminder that heroes don't have to be perfectly healthy to be powerful. That adventure is possible even when your body says otherwise. That magic can be found in the simple act of taking one more step.
A Message of Hope
My daughter's journey with POTS and chronic migraines continues, but so does her strength. The Arch Mage Series stands as a testament to her resilience and to all those who face invisible battles every day. If this story can give even one person hope, one young reader the courage to keep going, then every word was worth writing.
