A kingdom in exile. A forest that feeds on fear. And the one girl who sees through both.
Paelinar never wanted the crown — but after a bloody coup forces him to lead his people into the wilderness, survival becomes the only throne worth fighting for.
Their refuge turns nightmare when an earthquake tears open something ancient: a supernatural forest that spreads like a plague, luring the desperate and the grieving with the promise of everything they've lost. The harder Paelinar fights to protect his people, the deeper the Lure reaches into him — and he begins to suspect it knows his secrets better than he does. So does Maelinde. She's the last person he wants to trust, and the one he can't stop thinking about.
But the forest isn't his only enemy. His brother is coming — hungrier for revenge than for the crown — and he'll burn everything Paelinar has built to collect it.
Two monsters. One impossible choice. And no power in this world that can stop both.
Perfect for fans of Anthony Ryan's Blood Song, John Gwynne's Bloodsworn Trilogy, and Ryan Cahill's The Bound and the
Broken.

Synopsis
Synopsis
But when yellow-sailed invaders strike his port city, the young prince must defend a fledgling nation his own ruthless family has sworn to destroy. His only weapons are the Shurate Brotherhood, warrior knights who master their own hearts before they master a blade, and powers awakening inside him that he doesn't yet understand.
Worse than any fleet is the Lure: a mythical forest that doesn't kill with teeth. It kills with false emotions (shame, fear, longing), drawing its victims in until they walk willingly into its grasp. And beside him is a soul-seer who can see straight through every defense he has ever built.
Across the sea, an exiled enemy is building an empire, and he's coming for Paelinar. Six books. Two arcs. One question: who will sit the throne?
For readers of Anthony Ryan, John Gwynne and Ryan Cahill: a clean, slow-burn epic fantasy of warrior brotherhoods, monstrous forests and a romance worth waiting for.

Chapter One Look Inside
Chapter One Look Inside
"The cliffs hold what cannot be held. The sea returns what should not return. When the strangers come ashore, they bring the older country with them—and we who built our walls against memory must learn the old language again."
—Lar Dockurm, On the Migration, Recovered Fragment
Chapter One: The Summons
"A Shurate bears the weight of those around him. An anchor in the storm. A beacon in the dark."
—The Atlas, First Teaching
Come at once. Invaders landed on our shores. The message pounded in Paelinar's mind as he drove his horse across the barren Expanse. Ahead, Master Ruuln rode hard, his mount kicking up a cloud of dust that stung Paelinar's eyes.
What is happening in Port Haven? He squinted through the dust. Ruuln's figure blurred—then doubled. The present race fractured, colliding with memories of outrunning armies. If the village falls... Paelinar hadn't predicted an attack from the sea to the west. No one had. So... Titans. Is this my fault?
He dragged in a breath—dust flooding into his lungs. He coughed hard enough to lose his stirrup.
He slipped. Panic jolted him. He clawed at the pommel and clamped his legs, barely catching himself. "Tchah!" Cursing as he coughed, he hauled himself upright. Fool. Why did Ruuln bother with him? His mentor had encouraged him forward, but he still lagged behind in the dust. A fool and a coward. These invaders—Paelinar had no information about them. No information meant no plan. And no plan chilled his insides. Through billowing clouds of dust reddened by the setting sun, Ruuln's cloak pulled ahead. Nothing kept his speed in check. Paelinar swiped a hand across his face. His personal issues didn't matter—only reaching Port Haven did.
With a shout and a jab of his heels, he broke through the dust cloud. Twenty knights rode out of the dust in formation, their royal blue cloaks snapping behind them, each marked with the symbol of the Shurate Brotherhood—a scale balanced on the tip of a sheathed sword. The embodiment of honor. He could never shine like them. Not with the filth in his blood.
"Especially now, my talented apprentice. Shurates control themselves—body, mind, and face. We bear the weight of those around us. Even while riding into chaos." Paelinar took stock of himself. Racing heart. Tight jaw. Clenched muscles. This wasn't just embarrassment—also fear. He hadn't faced a real opponent in six years. Not since Prince Sarden—and their near-fatal duel. Relax. You left Sarden in Kael. Whatever waits on the beach can't be worse than him. He mentally shoved down the past. Locked it away. Breathe. Calm. Control.
His expression smoothed into a natural stillness. Ruuln grunted in approval. "Bland and content. A fine base face. One would never know the turmoil inside." Relief uncaged his chest. His control freed him.
Dark trees blurred by with each passing mile. Before Paelinar knew it, the gray glow of predawn light backlit the fishing village of Port Haven. Tidy wooden houses with covered verandas built into the second story crowded the edge of the street. Port Haven had doubled in size over the last six years. Many of the teenagers brought from Kael grew up, married, and had children of their own. Now many of them lingered on the verandas, gazing toward the sea. Their toddlers huddled about their legs.
A sudden image of savage invaders breaking into homes and grabbing screaming women and children by the hair popped into Paelinar's head. He had no control over the carnage in Kael, but here in his fledgling nation, he'd do anything to keep his people safe.
